College Works Career Impact
In one sentence, what has CW meant to you?
The experiences and, more importantly, the relationships gained through College Works Painting have shaped and formed me into a person that I wouldn’t recognize from 5 years ago but one that I am extremely proud of.
How did your CW experience impact your career? Immediately after graduation? Now?
Unfortunately it did not get me into medical school which was my immediate goal after graduation. However, I consider it 100% the reason I was able to get the current position I hold the year after I graduated.
What was the greatest lesson you learned from your CW experience?
Probably do everything with confidence and roll with the punches. If you take ownership everything that you do and prepare yourself heading into anything from estimates to interviews, you will be perceived as successful. You also have to be able to adapt and as any College Works Painting alumni knows, the days that go wrong far outnumber the days that go perfectly. Learning how to problem solve and think outside the box to resolve situations has prepared me for the real-life aspects of running a business and managing people.
Advice
What advice do you have for potential CW participants? Current CW participants?
For potential College Works Painting participants: do your research and make sure you understand the work you have to put in to be successful. Talent will only take you so far in this program, work ethic is what separates the cream of the crop. Current College Works Painting participants: Listen to your District Manager! They’re the most knowledgeable person you will talk to on a daily basis and they probably know your business better than you do. It took me 6 weeks to learn that the hard way. After realizing that my booking rate went from around 4% to 35% by the end of the year.
What’s your favorite memory from CW?
Trying to pick one memory from the 4 years I spent with the amazing people of the Oregon division is extremely difficult. It would probably be the first time we all decided that cutting V-necks in our t-shirts at the South Umpqua payroll was a good idea, thus beginning a tradition I hope will continue for years to come. The deep V of DLB will always be one of my favorite pictures.
