In one sentence, what has CW meant to you?
College Works Painting is still one of the hardest things I’ve ever done – but one of the best learning experiences for work ethic, creativity, and leadership.
How did your CW experience impact your career? Immediately after graduation? Now?
College Works Painting solidified my interest in entrepreneurship and let me prove to myself that I was capable of meeting and exceeding my ambitious goals. Now, I know what it takes to build a successful business and I apply those lessons to my startup.
What was the greatest lesson you learned from your CW experience?
Treat people with respect – whether they are clients, employees, friends – and even when they don’t treat you that way in return!
Advice
What advice do you have for potential CW participants? Current CW participants?
The difference between success and failure in College Works Painting is your mindset and nothing else. Oh, and also – charge 30% more than you first calculate on all your estimates.
What’s your best advice for someone interested in entering your career field?
Connections are everything. Meet cool people and spend time with them. If you want to get something, give it first (i.e. if you want a job, figure out how to get one of your friends a job and it will come back to help you).
What’s your favorite memory from CW?
Now that I’m looking back on the experience, it was pretty badass when I was running 4 crews of painters and cranking out sales. At the time it seemed like hell! :)
