College Works Career Impact

In one sentence, what has CW meant to you?

College Works Painting was the single most challenging experience I’ve had in my life – I wouldn’t trade it for anything and I’ve grown immensely from it.

How did your CW experience impact your career? Immediately after graduation? Now?

In every job interview since I referred to my time at College Works Painting. I was put in situations that took me well out of my comfort zone, and learned to excel. Presenting to a boardroom of executives is a lot less scary after having to convince someone you’ve never met, at age 20, that you can paint their house better than their contractor they’ve used for as long as you’ve been alive.

What was the greatest lesson you learned from your CW experience?

Stay calm, patient, and focused.

Advice

What advice do you have for potential CW participants? Current CW participants?

Dig deep – you have the ability to do this, you just don’t know it yet. Outwork everyone – you’ll be amazed what you can get done before other people wake up Stay organized and efficient – that planner? Yeah, use it.

What’s your best advice for someone interested in entering your career field?

Accumulate transferable and relevant skills. Take courses in school which may better prepare you for your ultimate goals. Expose yourself to a wide range of information and absorb as much as you can. READ everything.

What’s your favorite memory from CW?

Getting the final check on a $13K job, and the more important handshake and smile from the client. House looks beautiful to this day.

Last words of wisdom?

Work harder than you ever thought you could, and harder than anyone else in your district, and don’t let a couple bumps in the road slow you down.
