In one sentence, what has CW meant to you?
College Works Painting was by far the best choice for an internship I could have made.
How did your CW experience impact your career? Immediately after graduation? Now?
Literally everything I am doing now with project management boils down to the skills I learned with College Works Painting, just at a much larger scale now.
What do you want to tell your clients about what it meant to work with them and how it has helped you get to where you are today?
Biddle Morris. It was truly an honor working for him and the project was a complete disaster at one point but he stayed true to me and stuck it out and allowed me to take control of it and in the end his house came out great and he wrote me a recommendation letter.
What was the greatest lesson you learned from your CW experience?
The greatest lesson I learned was to be able to fix a problem with production and calm down the homeowner by talking to them and making sure it would be fixed.
How have the friendships and networks you built during CW affected you?
The trips we took I will remember forever, especially Cancun and white water rafting in Maine. It was great meeting all of the interns since I was the only intern from CCSU.
If you had to come up with a one line slogan for CW, what would it be?
An even higher degree of painting.
Advice
What advice do you have for potential CW participants? Current CW participants?
It’s what you make it. Be ready to work if you want to succeed. It is unlike any other office internship you will take and you truly test yourself and if you do it right you will become a more independent and stronger person.
Many college students struggle to choose between an internship specific to their target industry or doing CW. What advice would you give them on this subject if they wanted to enter your career field?
Definitely choose College Works Painting. I was an engineering major on the fence about whether or not do go through with this internship or apply for an engineering one but I am very happy I chose College Works Painting. The fact that I can say I ran my own $144k business and still have an engineering degree makes me more marketable and my resume stands out more, and I learned such great skills that I wouldn’t have learned sitting around in an office.
What’s your best advice for someone interested in entering your career field?
If you are looking to become a project manager, you need to have patience but also be able to be in charge and make big decisions. You also need to have a great sense of time management and know how to assess situations when things go wrong.
What’s your favorite memory from CW?
Cancun.
Last words of wisdom?
Every day you decide not to go out and market or not to pick up the phone and make some calls is a missed opportunity. You only have one chance so make the most of it.
