My strong sense of accomplishment and a much greater self-confidence in my abilities for any future endeavors.
College Works Career Impact
In one sentence, what has CW meant to you?
College Works Painting offered me the opportunity to prove myself to myself and others, including potential employers. It increased my self confidence and the ability to handle big responsibilities.
How did your CW experience impact your career? Immediately after graduation? Now?
I haven’t graduated yet, but I now have a solid resume that shows my ability and effectiveness in taking on major responsibilities.
What do you want to tell your clients about what it meant to work with them and how it has helped you get to where you are today?
George and Susan Miller 2013 Working for these two was definitely a highlight of my summer. They were my first estimate, but one of my last booked jobs.Throughout the entire process they were the nicest and most supportive people I could imagine. During the project, they were happy to offer my painters and I drinks and food during the summer heat and constantly appreciated and admired the work we did for them. They made my day better during any tough times and were completely understanding and patient with complications that came up through the process and never once complained. They made my job a little easier and were such a joy to work with. Their optimism and overall happiness reflect a lot of my own personality and just confirmed that there are nice people out there who are willing to help a young college kid pursue his dreams. Thank you guys so much for all you’ve done and if there is ever anything you need help with feel free to give me a call. Thank you!
What was the greatest lesson you learned from your CW experience?
Stress management and building rapport in order to build a network of people who could potentially help me one day.
How have the friendships and networks you built during CW affected you?
My College Works Painting friends are now my friends for life. Being from a small division, we were able to build close relationships with everyone including those above us. From payroll events, to Maryland road trips, on down across the border to Cancun they have been there with me and made my summer. We had many a good time to go along with all the hardship we all experienced. I could not ask for a better group of co-workers/friends. They are the best and we will be lifelong friends.
If you had to come up with a one line slogan for CW, what would it be?
Obviously it is work hard, play harder this slogan meant so much to me and helped me through my rough times. There’s always the pay off after a hard day of work!
Advice
What advice do you have for potential CW participants? Current CW participants?
Work hard and stay committed to yourself and to your position. It is hard work, but it pays off in so many different ways.
What’s your best advice for someone interested in entering your career field?
For me personally, this was a struggle as I am in the Wildlife field which is pretty much the opposite end of the spectrum from the ideals of this internship. It was easier for me as I was in transition between majors to choose this internship as I would most likely not have been able to get into an internship in my field based on lack of experience. To those struggling, this internship applies to any field you are in as it transcends just business ideals, it teaches stress management, time management, customer relations, building a personal network, and friend relationships. There are not many internships like this that challenge you and pay off so well in the end. I recommend this internship to any field you are pursuing as it goes above all fields and teaches you life lessons.
What’s your favorite memory from CW?
Payroll events where we got together with all the interns and built strong friendships that will last the rest of my life.
Last words of wisdom?
College Works Painting is an amazing internship, but is not one to be taken lightly. It requires a lot of you and will challenge you throughout. The benefits of participating make it well worthwhile and I recommend it to anyone who is able to commit and wants the opportunity to separate themselves from their peers.
