In one sentence, what has CW meant to you?
To me, College Works Painting has been all about embracing challenge.
How did your CW experience impact your career? Immediately after graduation? Now?
College Works Painting had a huge impact on my career immediately after I parted ways. I applied mostly for sales related positions and hiring managers were typically impressed by my experience. I credit College Works (and my VP at the time) as he helped me develop my resume and really convey all I did throughout the internship. Even now in a seemingly unrelated career field I still find myself calling back on my experiences with College Works Painting.
What was the greatest lesson you learned from your CW experience?
I would say my greatest takeaway from College Works Painting was a new found understanding of what I wanted in a career and its relationship to my work life balance.
Advice
What advice do you have for potential CW participants? Current CW participants?
“My advice for potential College Works Painting participants would be to get ready for a wild ride. This internship is very difficult and will demand a lot of your time. There will be many ups and downs with the internship and it’s up to you to go into it with the correct mindset and make the most of it. For current interns, my advice would be to take a deep breath. Take some time to step back and look at how far you’ve come and what your end goal is. It’s easy to get caught up in the day to day grind and lose site of why you’re there. Continue to works towards your goals and know that it will be worth it in the end. Lean on your fellow interns and your leadership to help you finish what you started. “
Many college students struggle to choose between an internship specific to their target industry or doing CW. What advice would you give them on this subject if they wanted to enter your career field?
Do what’s best for you (only you know what that is). If you have a solid internship in your target industry and it makes sense then you should definitely go for it. On the other hand, College Works Painting is a great opportunity and the experience you get from this internship can be applied to any career field.
What’s your best advice for someone interested in entering your career field?
Don’t give up. Resent trends are showing a lot of people trying to enter the career field so it may take some time before you receive an offer or a “dream position”. Get as many certifications and relevant experience as you can and be prepared to communicate it well with the hiring mangers.
What’s your favorite memory from CW?
All the payroll Fridays and Windsor/Cancun trips. Too many great memories to narrow it down to one.
Last words of wisdom?
My last words of wisdom would be finish what your start. If you decide to do the internship, go all out. Only participate/come back each year if you are fully committed. I can tell you first hand that if you aren’t fully committed it won’t work and could cause a strain on the relationships you created there.
